Our Approach

Our approach cannot be categorized for design springs from the unique qualities of a particular site and the singular characteristics of each client.  We look for creative clues inherent in our clients and avoid imposing uninformed preconceptions.  We seek solutions with an economy of means where each gesture satisfies multiple needs, and we strive toward memorable environments that transcend beyond the ordinary.

HMA’s team of professionals work in an open studio environment that facilitates interaction and creativity.  Regularly, our studio enjoys clients participating in explorative charets.

Our tools consist of historic and contemporary references, hand drawn artistry, and the latest in computerized modeling fully integrated with construction drawings. This allows for rapid visualization and testing of design alternatives in an extremely efficient process from initial concept through construction.

HMA advocates urban infill development, which protects existing natural and agricultural lands, strengthens an urban core, utilizes existing infrastructure, and promotes more efficient transportation systems.

For our custom residential clients, we pour our passion into nature to bridge a poetic connection toward fulfillment of the human soul.  Downtown or remote, we love both environments!

Sustainability and LEED

We feel a connection with our surrounding ecology and are conscious about minimizing our impact on nature’s delicate balances.  Our commitment to sustainable environmental design is an integral part of all our work, beginning with an evaluation of getting the most value and utility with the least amount of necessary building. We create solar oriented living architecture using passive heating and cooling strategies combined with technology to minimize energy consumption.  We select responsible materials and products to create an environment that’s healthy and spiritually sound.  We seek local natural resources to minimize shipping, and network with local contractors to support the local economy.  We recycle wherever possible.  We design to suite our clients programs, but also consider future adaptability and longevity.  Our purpose is “environmental sustainability”.

We applaud our clients who share in this vision and offer LEED certification (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Efficient Design).
